A big news has come out for lakhs of investors and traders associated with the Indian stock market. There has been a change in the expiry date of Nifty Futures and Options (F&O) which has never happened in the last two and a half decades.

Till now the expiry of Nifty on Thursday has been changed to Tuesday. This decision will not only change the trading pattern, but will also give a new dimension to the stability and transparency of the market. This new rule approved by SEBI and NSE will come into effect from September 1, 2025.

Nifty Expiry journey so far –

Nifty 50 was launched in 1996. –

Nifty futures were launched in 2000 and the first monthly expiry took place in June 2000. –

In 2019, NSE started weekly expiry, but even then the day was kept as Thursday. Now for the first time it is happening that the day of weekly Nifty expiry has been changed, which will have a big impact on the trading pattern.

What is Nifty Expiry?

When an investor or trader takes a futures or option contract on the Nifty index, it has a fixed expiry date. The deal expires on that day and its settlement takes place. This last date is called ‘expiry’. Now this day will be Tuesday.

What will be the benefit of the change?

Experts believe that expiry on only two days in a week- Nifty (Tuesday) and Bank Nifty (Thursday)- will reduce the pressure on the market. Due to clear expiry dates, there will be less technical glitches and less volatility in the market. This change will give investors a chance to better manage risk. There will be a balance between both the exchanges, which will make derivative trading more systematic and transparent.

According to SEBI, this new rule will make futures and options trading smooth and stable in the market. This will be especially beneficial for those investors who want to trade with less risk.

When will the new system be implemented?

– Nifty will expire on Tuesday from 1 September 2025.
– Bank Nifty’s expiry will continue to be on Thursday for now.
