The central government has appointed 1990-batch IRS officer Sandip Pradhan as a Whole-Time Member (WTM) of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). His tenure will be for a period of three years from the date of joining, or until further orders, according to an official government notification.
Sandip Pradhan’s current role
Sandip Pradhan is currently serving as Director General of Income Tax (Investigation) in Pune. His appointment is in accordance with the SEBI Act, 1992 and the terms and conditions of service for the appointment of the Chairman and Members of SEBI.
Pradhan will now be part of SEBI’s top leadership group, at a time when the regulator is shouldering greater regulatory, supervisory and enforcement responsibilities in India’s rapidly growing capital markets.
Work of Whole Time Member of SEBI
A Whole-Time Member (WTM) of SEBI is an official who is responsible for overseeing and enforcing regulations in the capital markets. Their role is to investigate market irregularities, fraud, insider trading, defrauding investors, and corporate disclosure irregularities, and to take strict action when necessary.
The WTM also plays a key role in enacting new regulations, formulating policies, monitoring companies and intermediaries (such as brokers, mutual funds, investment advisors), and passing major enforcement orders. Overall, the WTM is a key decision-making position within SEBI, ensuring market transparency, investor protection, and a healthy market environment.
