Rs 2000 Notes Update: RBI Issues Clarification on ₹2000 Notes – Full Details Inside

Rs 2000 Notes Update : According to official data released by the Reserve Bank of India ( RBI ) on Monday, a total of ₹5,956 crore notes of Rs 2,000 denomination are still in circulation.

This announcement comes two and a quarter years after the decision was made to withdraw these notes from circulation on May 19, 2023.

At the time of announcement, ₹3.56 lakh crore was in circulation

According to the RBI, when the demonetisation of Rs 2,000 notes was announced, this denomination had notes worth Rs 3.56 lakh crore in circulation. So far, 98.33% of these notes have been returned.

2,000 rupee notes still legal tender

Although the circulation of Rs 2,000 notes is slowly decreasing, they are still legal tender and their transactions are not officially illegal. That is, they can still be used legally.

Facility to exchange and deposit notes continues

According to news agency Bhasha, RBI said that the facility of exchanging and depositing Rs 2,000 notes is still available. This facility started in 19 issue offices of RBI from 19 May 2023. From 9 October 2023, individuals or institutions can also deposit these notes in their bank accounts. Common citizens can also deposit their notes in their bank accounts through Indian Postal Service by sending them from any post office to RBI offices.

There are 19 issue offices of RBI where this facility is available

This facility is available at RBI offices in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Belapur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna, Thiruvananthapuram.

These notes were issued after demonetization

It is noteworthy that after demonetization in November 2016, Rs 2,000 notes were issued in large quantities to meet the currency shortage quickly.
