The Railway Ministry has changed the upgrade rules for sleeper class passengers. Now sleeper class passengers will not be upgraded to First AC. Waiting list passengers will first be upgraded to Third AC Economy or Third AC and then to Second AC. This rule will apply to all trains including Rajdhani and Duronto.
Passengers traveling in sleeper class of trains will not get the facility to travel in First AC under the upgrade. The Railway Ministry has issued an order amending the upgrade policy and cut down the facilities.
Under the order issued by the Director (Passenger Marketing-2) of the Railway Board, with the aim of maximum utilization of the seats available in any train, the railway administration used to give the benefit of upgrade facility to the passengers on the waiting list.
Under this scheme started in 2006, passengers paying full fare in exchange for the available spaces were given the facility of upgrade to higher class, but now this policy has been changed.
What is the new rule?
Under the new rule, passengers with waiting tickets for sleeper will be upgraded to third AC economy or third AC as the first option. If seats are not available here, the ticket of the concerned passenger will be upgraded to second AC as the second option.
Only the second AC passenger will be able to be upgraded to first class. Similarly, the ticket of the second seating passenger will now get upgrade only to AC chair car, while the chair car passenger will be upgraded to executive chair car and vistadome coach and the Vistadome coach passengers will be upgraded to executive Anubhuti class only.
After the new system is uploaded in CRIS, this system will be effective across the country. The new system will be effective in all types of trains including Rajdhani, Duronto.
Upgradation option will have to be chosen
While booking a train ticket for any journey, the concerned passenger will have to choose the option of upgrade in the application form, only then will he get the facility of upgrade. While booking tickets online from IRCTC, passengers get the facility of automatic upgrade. Senior citizens will get messages
As per the order issued by the Railway Ministry, senior citizens who have booked under the lower berth category, if such passengers choose the option of upgradation, then they should be sent a message from the railways whether their ticket can get a lower seat under the upgrade or not.
For this, necessary updates have been ordered in the CRIS software. At the same time, the Railway Ministry has ordered that all the vacant seats should be given the benefit of upgradation without any restriction.
Also, it has been clearly stated in the order that if any new category is introduced in the future, then the passengers will get the benefit of upgradation only up to two levels.
