There’s good news for the nation’s long-awaited bullet train service. The Railway Minister has made a significant announcement. He stated that the first bullet train will run on the 50-km Surat-Bilimora section of Gujarat in Ahmedabad by 2027. The entire line will reach Mumbai by 2029. This project will further strengthen the country’s lifeline, the railways, reducing logistics costs and promoting green transportation.

During a project review in Gujarat, the Railway Minister stated that the Vapi-Sabarmati section will be completed by December 2027. Work on viaducts, girders, and tracks is in full swing in this Japanese-funded project. Recently, the Japanese Minister visited Gujarat to review the progress. The Minister stated that work on laying wire ducts, girders, tracks, and electrical cables has already begun. The first bullet train is targeted for August 2027.

He said that in the last 11 years, 2,764 km of new rail track has been built in Gujarat, which is equivalent to Denmark’s entire rail network. The total investment has reached ₹1.46 lakh crore. 87 stations have been renovated, 132 flyovers and underpasses, and freight corridors have been completed. The freight corridor has reduced container train travel time from 30 hours to 10-11 hours. Now, 400 freight trains are running daily. Vande Bharat, Namo Bharat, and Amrit Bharat trains are providing new facilities.

The project cost is ₹1.08 lakh crore, with Japan providing 81 percent of the funding. As of June 2025, ₹78,839 crore has been spent. Civil work on 300 km of viaducts and 6 stations in Gujarat has been completed. This project will cover the 534 km Mumbai-Ahmedabad distance in 2 hours with trains running at 320 km/h. The Railway Minister stated that the Gujarat government’s cooperation is commendable. More new projects will be launched in the future.
