The Indian Postal Department has made a big announcement under which it is planning to shut down its registered postal service. This decision will be effective from September 1, 2025.
The registered postal service of the Indian Postal Department has been running for more than 50 years. The department is planning to merge this service with Speed Post.
This decision has been taken by the Department of Posts with the aim of making its operations faster, easier to track and modern. The Department of Posts has directed all government departments, courts, universities and other institutions to convert their services to speed post before September 1.
What will be the impact on the general public?
After this merger by the Department of Posts, the postal service will become expensive, which will increase the cost of postal service for the common citizens and especially farmers, small traders and people in rural areas, who depend on cheap postal services. The price of speed post service starts at Rs 41 for up to 50 grams, while registered post is Rs 24.96 and Rs 5 for every additional 20 grams, making it 20 to 25% cheaper than speed post.
According to the Department of Posts, the demand for registered post has been declining steadily. Due to the increasing use of digital services, e-mail and private courier companies, people are now using traditional postal services less. According to government data, the number of parcels sent through registered post was 24.44 crore in the year 2011-12, which decreased to 18.46 crore by 2019-20. In view of this decline, the Postal Department has decided to merge registered post with speed post.
Many facilities will be available through Speed Post
Although registered post will be discontinued from September 1, 2025, many facilities will still be available through Speed Post, including tracking facility, fast delivery and delivery receipt. This decision of India Post is a major change in the postal service structure of the country. While on one hand Speed Post will make the services faster and modern, on the other hand, the common people may face some problems due to increased costs.
