Passport New Service : Now traveling abroad is going to be even easier and safer for Indians. India has also started chip-based biometric e-passports. With this new facility, India has now joined the list of more than 120 countries like America, Canada, Japan, France and UK, where this technology is already being used. E-passport will not only make the immigration process faster and contactless, but will also help in preventing identity fraud.
What is e-passport and what is special about it?
E-passport will be launched in India from April 2024 under Passport Seva Program 2.0. In the first phase, the pilot project was started in cities like Nagpur, Bhubaneswar, Jammu, Goa, Shimla, Jaipur, Chennai, Hyderabad and now its full rollout will happen by June 2025.
This new e-passport has an RFID chip and antenna embedded in the back cover, which stores the individual’s biometric and personal information such as name, date of birth, passport number, face and fingerprints securely. This data is encrypted as per international security standards such as BAC, PA and EAC.
How will the passenger experience change?
Indian citizens travelling abroad with e-passports will now be able to go through a faster, automated and contactless process at immigration checkpoints. E-gates will eliminate the need for long queues and make the travel experience more seamless.
India is now included in the list of these countries
Countries like America, Canada, Japan, France, Germany, UK, Singapore, Australia, South Korea are already using e-passport. With this step of India, Indian citizens will also get more respect and convenience while entering those countries.
How to apply for e-passport
Citizens can apply on the passport service portal as before. They will have to visit the nearest passport service centre or post office passport centre and provide biometric information. This is just a start. In the future, features like digital visa, mobile passport wallet, Aadhaar and DigiLocker integration can be added, making the journey completely digital and paperless.
