Security operations have shifted into high gear in the upper reaches of Kishtwar as of Monday morning, January 19, 2026. After a night-long halt due to the brutal terrain, the hunt for a group of trapped terrorists has resumed under the code name ‘Operation Trashi-I’.

The thing is, the stakes are incredibly high. Or nothing. Let’s be real, we’re less than a week away from Republic Day, and intelligence suggests these groups are desperate to cause a major disruption. Those too. The encounter, which started Sunday in the Sonnar village area of Chatroo, has already seen some heavy action.

Operation Trashi-I: Field Notes

It’s an ongoing situation where the mountains are as much an enemy as the militants.

  • The Toll: At least eight soldiers, including a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO), were injured on Sunday. The thing is, most of the injuries were caused by splinter wounds from a sudden grenade attack. Three of the soldiers were reportedly airlifted to the military hospital in Udhampur for specialized care.

  • The Enemy: Security forces believe they have two to three foreign terrorists cornered. They are suspected to be affiliated with Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM). And here’s the kicker—this is the same region where a police officer was killed last month, and the militants used the thick “deodar” foliage to vanish. Not this time.

  • The High-Tech Hunt: The Army’s White Knight Corps has deployed a “ring of steel.” The thing is, they aren’t just using boots on the ground; they’ve got night-vision drones, thermal imaging, and sniffer dogs combing the steep slopes.

  • The “Trashi” Context: This is the third major encounter in the Jammu region since the start of 2026. The thing is, the Billawar forests in Kathua saw similar gunfights on January 7 and 13. It’s an ongoing situation where the entire Chenab Valley is under a multi-tier security grid.

And Here’s the Kicker…

The timing isn’t a coincidence. The thing is, security has been beefed up across all 20 districts of J&K for January 26. Those too. From Dal Lake to the Line of Control, the BSF and CRPF are on high alert.

It’s an ongoing situation where the terrorists are using “height advantage” in the Chatroo belt to lob grenades down on search parties. The thing is, the Army has inducted additional Para-SF units to reinforce the cordon today. Or nothing. We’re waiting to hear if fresh contact has been established as the fog lifts from the Sonnar ridges.
