High-voltage political drama shifted from the Odisha Assembly to the outskirts of Bengaluru this weekend. On the eve of critical Rajya Sabha voting, Karnataka Deputy CM DK Shivakumar—long known as the Congress party’s “troubleshooter” for resort management—revealed what he terms a botched “Operation Lotus” attempt.

The incident occurred at a luxury resort in Bidadi, where eight Congress MLAs from Odisha have been staying since March 12 to avoid poaching. According to the Congress leadership, the “safety” of the resort was breached on Sunday morning by a team of four operatives allegedly linked to the BJP.

The Bidadi Incident: Cheques and Confessions

According to Shivakumar, the attempt was surprisingly overt:

  • The Entry: Four individuals entered the premises after a local contact named Suresh booked a room online.

  • The Offer: The group allegedly approached an MLA and offered ₹5 crore in exchange for a cross-vote in the Rajya Sabha polls.

  • Physical Evidence: Shivakumar claims that two cheques brought by the group were seized and handed over to the police as evidence.

  • The Capture: While two suspects fled the scene, two others were detained by the MLAs’ security and later handed over to the Bidadi police.

Who are the Accused? The Police Complaint

The formal FIR filed by Ashok Kumar Das names four individuals: Birendra Prasad, Suresh, Ajit Kumar Sahu, and Simachal Mohakud.

  • Threats of Violence: The complaint goes beyond bribery, alleging that when the MLAs refused the money, the accused used “abusive and filthy language” and threatened to kill the legislators if they returned to Odisha.

  • Local Link: The individual who facilitated the room booking is reportedly from the Byatarayanapura locality in Bengaluru.

Resort Politics: Why Odisha MLAs are in Bengaluru

The move to Bengaluru was triggered by the arithmetic of the Odisha Rajya Sabha seats.

  • The Vacancy: Odisha has four vacancies. The BJP and BJD had enough numbers to win three seats unopposed.

  • The Tussle: However, the BJP fielded an additional candidate, creating a fight for the fourth seat. This put the Congress’s 14 MLAs in a “kingmaker” position, leading to fears of poaching that prompted the flight to Bengaluru.

Reality Check

Resort politics has become a staple of Indian Rajya Sabha elections. Still, the allegation of “signed cheques” is an unusual and potentially “clumsy” detail in a world where horse-trading is typically done in untraceable cash. Therefore, the authenticity of the cheques will be the central pillar of the police investigation. In fact, if the cheques can be traced back to BJP-linked accounts, it would represent one of the most documented cases of electoral bribery in recent history.

The Loopholes

The Congress says the MLAs “refused” the bribe. In fact, this is a “Strategic Leak Loophole”—by announcing the bribe attempt 24 hours before the vote, the Congress has made it politically impossible for any of their MLAs to cross-vote today without looking guilty. Therefore, the move is as much about “branding” as it is about “security.” Still, the “Threat Loophole” remains; by including “death threats” in the FIR, the Congress has elevated the case from a political dispute to a serious criminal matter, ensuring the accused cannot get easy bail before the voting is over.

What This Means for You

If you are following the Rajya Sabha polls today (March 16), watch the Odisha tally closely. First, realize that if any Congress MLA still cross-votes despite this FIR, it will signal a total collapse of party discipline. Then, if you are a resident of Karnataka, understand that your state has once again become the “Ground Zero” for national political maneuvering, highlighting DK Shivakumar’s role as the party’s primary protector of legislators.

Finally, understand that voter trust is at stake. You should expect the Election Commission of India (ECI) to take note of the Bidadi police report. Before the final results are announced tonight, check for any suspensions or disqualifications that might be sought by the Congress against their own “missing” or “unreachable” members.

What’s Next

Expect the Bidadi Police to present the caught suspects in court for remand later today. Then, look for a rebuttal from the Odisha BJP, who will likely label this a “staged drama” by the Congress to hide their own internal dissent. Finally, expect the 8 MLAs to be escorted under heavy security back to Bhubaneswar to cast their votes before the 4:00 PM deadline today.
