Know why your ITR processing and tax refund may take time this year
Tax experts believe that the Income Tax Department will thoroughly check the assessment reports and old tax returns of previous years. Only after this will the refund be issued. This year the work of filing returns also started late and now ITR processing and refund are taking time.
Refund will be given only after checking the old returns
According to tax professionals, when the report came out in April that this year the refund may take some extra time and will not be given immediately, many people may not have taken it seriously, but now when lakhs of people have filed their ITR and most of them are waiting for the refund, questions are being raised.
This time the Income Tax Department wants to ensure that taxpayers have not committed any kind of fraud in the past years and that is why according to them, all old ITRs and assessment orders are being reviewed again.
CA Suresh Surana says that this step is part of the department’s new strategy to prevent fake refund claims. He said that tax officials have also been instructed to stop new refunds if investigation of any taxpayer is pending in previous years or assessment has not been closed.
Tax experts believe that this time the delay in refund may cause trouble to those honest taxpayers who file ITR on time every year and there is no case pending against them.
A senior tax consultant says, “The IT department should make a transparent and clear system, so that taxpayers can know why their refund is stuck and in how many days processing is expected. At present, there is a state of confusion due to some kind of lack of communication.”
What is the update so far?
– The process of filing ITR started at the end of May 2025
– More than 75 lakh ITRs have been filed so far
– More than 71.1 lakh returns have been e-verified
– The data on the number of ITRs processed on the department’s website has been removed
– The tax department will issue refunds only after checking the tax records of older years.
What should taxpayers do?
According to a report by Financial Express, experts advise that taxpayers need not panic. If you have filed ITR correctly and filled all the details correctly, then you will get a refund, albeit late.
CA Surana suggests that taxpayers keep checking the processing status. Apart from this, if any assessment notice has been received in previous years, then check its status as well.
The Income Tax Department last month extended the deadline for filing income tax returns for Assessment Year 2025-26 to September 15, 2025. Earlier the deadline was July 31, giving non-audit category taxpayers an additional 46 days to fulfil their ITR filing obligations.
