New Delhi: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Thursday that there is no mistake in importing for economic growth but it is surprising that the idol of Lord Ganesha is also being brought from China. He said that imports of raw materials not available in India for industries (Imports from China) are not wrong. On Thursday, he said this while addressing the BJP workers in Tamil Nadu in a virtual manner.
Import of essential goods is not wrong
The Finance Minister said, “There is no mistake in such imports, which can boost domestic production and generate employment opportunities.” It definitely should be. However, imports that neither help to increase employment nor support growth will not benefit self-sufficiency and the Indian economy.

He said that on the occasion of Ganesh Ch Turthi every year, Ganesh idol is traditionally bought from local potters. However, today it is also being imported from China. Why is this situation? Can we not make Ganesh idol at our domestic level?

Import of products made in India is not right
He expressed surprise that imports of household items like soap cans, plastic items, incense sticks would not support self-sufficient India, especially when these products are made by the India Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME). The basic feeling of self-reliant India is that goods which are being made or can be made domestically, should not be imported.
He said that self-sufficiency in India has been going on for a long time. But it got foggy and now we have to increase local manufacturing in this campaign. He also clarified that the self-sufficient India campaign also does not mean that it should not be imported at all.
