There’s some good news for FASTag users across the country, who use it for toll payments. The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has issued new rules to improve the FASTag holder experience by simplifying and streamlining the ‘Know Your Vehicle’ (KYV) process. This will make it easier for vehicle owners to complete KYV and reduce the risk of FASTag service being discontinued.

What is KYV and why is it important?

KYV, or “Know Your Vehicle,” is a mandatory verification process for FASTags. Its purpose is to ensure that the FASTag is linked to the vehicle for which it was issued. This requires uploading a photo and registration details of the vehicle. This not only increases the transparency of the system but also prevents misuse, such as using a FASTag on multiple vehicles or carrying a FASTag without a vehicle.

New instructions of NHAI

Until now, KYV required both a front and side photo of the vehicle, which was a hassle for users. However, under the new rules issued by the Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL), the side photo requirement has been removed. You simply need to upload a front photo of the vehicle, clearly showing the number plate and FASTag.

Vehicle information

In the new system, when you enter the vehicle number, chassis number, or mobile number, your vehicle registration details will automatically appear on the Vahan portal. If multiple vehicles are registered to a single mobile number, you can choose which vehicle to complete the KYV for.

FASTag service will not be discontinued immediately.

Previously, failing to complete the KYV process would result in FASTag service being disabled. However, this will no longer be the case. Even if your FASTag KYV hasn’t been completed, your FASTag service won’t be disabled immediately. Instead, you’ll be given sufficient time and SMS reminders to complete the KYV.

This assistance will also be available

If you have any problems completing the KYV, your FASTag-issuing bank will assist you. Alternatively, you can contact the NHAI helpline at 1033 for assistance or a complaint.
