New UK Immigration Rules: The British government has announced the country’s largest-ever policy change for refugees. Under this, refugee status will now be temporary, not permanent, and the waiting period for permanent settlement will be increased from five years to 20. This move is considered the most comprehensive reform of the country’s refugee policies in modern times.

The motive and motivation of the government

The Labour government has taken this step to tighten controls on migrants arriving from France by illegal small boats. The aim is primarily to limit the influence of the populist Reform UK party, which has in the past made migration policy a central issue on the national agenda. The government said the policy draws inspiration from the Danish model, which is considered to have the strictest migration policies in Europe. Growing anti-immigrant sentiment there has led many countries to tighten their rules, although this move has also been criticized by human rights groups.

Key changes

• Tax-based support for refugees, such as housing and weekly allowances, will now be available only to those who are working or contributing to local communities and economies.
• Refugees who have the ability to work but do not want to work, or who break the law, will no longer receive this support.
• The refugee’s protection status will be temporary, subject to regular review, and may be revoked if the country of origin is deemed safe.
• Britain’s system is currently considered more generous than in other European countries, where refugees automatically gain permanent residence after five years. This will now be changed.

Review and new timeline for permanent settlement

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said that refugee status will now be reviewed every two years or six months. The permanent settlement process has been extended to 20 years. She also said that further details of this policy will be shared on Monday, including updates related to Article 5 of the European Convention on Human Rights.

“Our aim is to prioritize those who contribute to our society and economy. Now, our approach to refugees will be equal opportunity, but with responsibility,” Shabana Mahmood said.
