New rules related to driving licenses and RCs! Transport Ministry issues major order

An important update has arrived for those holding a driver’s license or vehicle registration document. The Ministry of Transport (MoRTH) of the Government of India has implemented a new rule that now requires every vehicle owner and driver’s license holder to update their mobile number in the system.

The ministry says this change is designed to make vehicle and license-related services more digital, secure, and user-friendly. The good news is that you don’t have to visit the RTO for this—you can do it all online from the comfort of your home.

Why is it important to update your mobile number?

The government says that keeping the correct mobile number registered will ensure timely access to important information related to your license and vehicle, prevent fraud or technical issues, and ensure that services such as traffic challans, fitness reminders, and license renewals reach users promptly.

How to update your mobile number from home?

The Ministry of Transport has released a simple method for updating your mobile number, designed under the Digital India Mission.

Follow these easy steps:

First go to –

-As soon as the site opens, the option of Mobile Number Update will appear as a pop-up on the homepage.

-Two QR codes have also been given on the website which can be scanned to reach the portal directly.

-Now fill in your vehicle number, date of registration and chassis number.

(DL number and date of birth will be required for driving license update.)

-After filling in all the details correctly, enter the new mobile number and submit the form.

-After the update, you will get a confirmation message and the number will be registered in the system.

Can’t do it online? Here’s your option.

If you don’t have internet access or are experiencing technical difficulties while completing the online process, don’t worry. You can also visit your nearest RTO (Regional Transport Office) to have this update done.

What are the benefits?

– Any vehicle-related information will be sent directly to your phone
– Prevent incorrect information on your RC or DL
​​- Reminders for challans, taxes, and renewals will be sent via SMS/email
– Communication will be easier in the event of vehicle theft or fraud

Caution! Giving a wrong number can be costly.

The Ministry of Transport has clarified that
entering a fake mobile number or someone else’s number
can disrupt services due to non-receipt of OTP.
Cyber ​​security issues can also arise.
Therefore, register only your correct and working mobile number.

 The Ministry has appealed

through social media, newspapers and portals that “all vehicle owners and license holders should update their mobile numbers as soon as possible, so that all important information reaches you at the right time.”
