Aadhaar Update Online: Currently, one has to go to the Aadhaar Seva Kendra to update most of the details in the Aadhaar card. But, this will not happen from November 2025. Aadhaar card holders will be able to update many important details sitting at home.
This facility is part of a new initiative by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) aimed at making digital Aadhaar services more convenient and accessible, especially for people who live in remote areas or have mobility issues.
Which details can be updated online?
Till now, Aadhaar holders could update demographic details like name (minor changes), address, gender and date of birth (up to a certain limit) on the myAadhaar portal. This scope will be further expanded from November. According to UIDAI officials, now some important information can also be changed online.
- Name changes, such as spelling corrections or abbreviations, can be completed online.
- The limit and scope of date of birth update will also be expanded.
- Family member information, such as father or spouse’s name will also be updated online.
- The address can also be updated through the Aadhaar of another resident. This will be document or consent based.
Apart from this, the facility of updating mobile number and email address can also be made available digitally in the future. Currently, it can be updated by visiting the Aadhaar service center.
How will the online update process happen?
- You have to login to myAadhaar portal.
- OTP will come on the registered mobile number.
- After OTP verification, the document will have to be uploaded.
- The update will start after verification from UIDAI system.
In some cases, such as major changes to the name or date of birth, video verification may be required. After all changes are approved, the updated digital Aadhaar copy can be downloaded. UIDAI says most requests will be processed within 3–5 working days.
These things have to be kept in mind
- The uploaded documents must be clean, valid and matching with the updates.
- Providing fake documents or incorrect information may result in rejection of the application or temporary suspension of the Aadhaar number.
- For biometric changes (fingerprints, eye scan or photo), it will be necessary to visit the service centre as it requires physical verification.
UIDAI will release new guidelines and list of accepted documents around November. With this digital facility, crores of Aadhaar holders will now be able to correct information like name, address and family details from home.
Why was this change made?
The demand for digital services has increased since the Covid pandemic. The aim of this initiative of UIDAI is to reduce the crowd at Aadhaar service centers and improve the digital experience. More than 140 crore Aadhaar numbers have been issued in the country so far, and crores of people take advantage of government schemes, banking and mobile services through it.
