If your car’s FASTag isn’t scanning at a toll plaza or shows an “invalid tag,” there’s no need to worry. Many drivers have faced this problem recently. The National Highways Authority of India has now implemented a new FASTag-related rule to address this situation.
What is the FASTag KYV process?
FASTag KYV, or “Know Your Vehicle Verification,” is a new verification process mandated by the NHAI. Its purpose is to ensure that each FASTag is used on the vehicle for which it was issued—to prevent instances of incorrect tags or fraud. This process requires the vehicle owner to prove that their FASTag is installed on the correct vehicle. This requires uploading the vehicle’s registration certificate (RC) and a photo of the vehicle.

Following
complaints from numerous users, the NHAI has simplified the process. Some major changes have been made to the rules:
➤ You no longer need to upload multiple photos as before—just one front photo is sufficient, clearly showing the number plate and FASTag sticker.
➤ Upon entering the vehicle number, the system will automatically fetch the RC information from the Vahan database.
➤ If verification remains incomplete, the FASTag will not be deactivated immediately; instead, NHAI will send an SMS reminder to the vehicle owner.
➤ If multiple FASTags are registered on a single mobile number, you can now choose which vehicle’s KYV to complete first.
➤ In case of any problem uploading documents, the bank or FASTag issuing institution will contact the customer directly.
Easy way to do FASTag KYV
➤ If your FASTag is not working, follow the steps below
➤ First, go to — https://fastag.ihmcl.com
Login with your registered mobile number.
➤ Upload a front photo of the vehicle, clearly showing the number plate and the FASTag installed on the windshield.
➤ The system will automatically fill in the RC details – check them and submit.
➤ If the tag is on the correct vehicle and is not being misused, the FASTag will be reactivated.
Why is this verification necessary?
According to NHAI, recently it was found in many cases that some people were using the FASTag of one vehicle on another vehicle. This was not only leading to misuse of the tag system but was also affecting the transparency of toll collection. Therefore, this KYV process has now been made mandatory so that the identity of every vehicle and its tag are linked to each other.
