Nepal Election Results: Balendra Shah’s RSP Leads in 101 Seats

So the political landscape of Nepal is undergoing a massive change today. On Friday, March 6, 2026, the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) took a huge lead in the general elections. The goal of this vote is to form a new House of Representatives after months of protests. In fact, the RSP is now leading in 101 constituencies under the first-past-the-post system. Plus, their prime ministerial candidate, Balendra Shah, is ahead by over 11,000 votes.

Traditional Parties Trail Behind

But here is the main reason why these results are shocking. Older parties like the Nepali Congress and the CPN-UML are trailing in almost every seat. Is the era of former Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli over? It seems so. Consequently, Mr. Oli is currently far behind in his own home turf of Jhapa-5. Moreover, the RSP is winning nearly 58% of the proportional representation votes counted so far. Previously, the traditional parties held a firm grip on the country. So, the “Gen-Z” wave appears to be winning the hearts of the voters. Therefore, the RSP is now the clear frontrunner to form the next government.

Early Winners and Proportional Gains

Still, many seats are yet to be fully counted. The plan for the 275-member house involves both direct and nationwide votes. And, two RSP candidates have already been declared winners in the capital. Accordingly, Ranju Neupane and Biraj Bhakta Shrestha have secured victories in Kathmandu-1 and Kathmandu-8.

Party Name FPTP Leads PR Vote Share
🟠 RSP (Balen Shah) 101 58.0%
🔵 Nepali Congress 11 18.0%
🔴 CPN-UML (Oli) 12 ~8.0%
🟡 RPP 8.9%

Why These Elections Matter

But why was the parliament dissolved in the first place? The reason traces back to the massive “Gen-Z” protests in September 2025. Why? Because the youth demanded a complete change in how the country is run. Essentially, the 60% voter turnout on March 5 shows that people were eager for a new direction. Indeed, the use of the Sainte-Lague method for PR seats will give the RSP even more power in the final count.

Then there is the matter of the official government formation. The reason the world is watching is that Balendra Shah is an enigmatic and popular mayor. Worth noting: This is the first time a new party has risen so fast in Nepal’s history. Ultimately, the final results will decide if Nepal enters a new era of stability and digital-first governance.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Who is leading the race for Prime Minister in Nepal? So, Balendra Shah is currently the most popular choice as his party dominates the polls. Because of this, he is likely to be the next Prime Minister if the current trends continue.

How many seats are needed for a majority? In fact, a party or coalition needs 138 seats out of 275 to form a government. Additionally, with 101 leads, the RSP is very close to reaching that mark on its own.

What happened to the traditional parties? But both the Nepali Congress and the CPN-UML have seen a sharp drop in their vote shares. Consequently, they may have to sit in the opposition for the first time in many years.
