New Delhi: National Consumer Day is celebrated every year in India on today’s day i.e. 24 December. National Consumer Day is celebrated on 24 December in the country because the Consumer Protection Act Bill was passed on 24 December 1986. The purpose of celebrating this day as National Consumer Day is to make people aware of the importance, rights and responsibilities of consumers.

According to the new rules, the seller of counterfeit and adulterated goods can face life imprisonment.

Know why consumer day is celebrated

Explain that on 24 December 1986, the Consumer Protection Act Bill was passed. Subsequently, in the year 1991 and 1993, the Act was amended. A trade amendment was introduced in December 2002 to make the Act more and more used. Subsequently, the Consumer Protection Act was implemented from 15 March 2003. First of all, the Consumer Protection Rules were also amended in 1987. After so many changes, it was fully notified on 5 March 2004.

  • The central government has recently increased consumer rights. Including cases of e-commerce website has made shopping safe.
  • The new rules have been named Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules 2020. In this, return, refund process has been made easier for online retailers.
  • The e-commerce rules will apply to all e-retailers who are providing products and services to Indian consumers. Then, whether their registered office is in India or abroad.
  • E-commerce sites like Amazon, Flipkart will have to give all kinds of information to the consumer.
  • The consumer has to tell what the agreement has been with the vendors. Expiry date, payment gateway safety and customer care number will also have to be mentioned.
  • Process of return, process of refund and rating of seller have to be reported.
  • With this, there will be no discrimination between customers and sellers.
  • Consumers have to explain the ways in which they can complain against a seller.
  • Till now the vendors were responsible, but now e-commerce companies will also be responsible, because the product shown on their platform has been purchased by paying at their gateway.
