Microsoft has officially unveiled a significant shift in its AI strategy, moving away from a single-provider model to a multi-model ecosystem. On Monday, March 30, 2026, the company introduced new features to its Microsoft 365 Copilot Researcher agent that allow OpenAI’s GPT and Anthropic’s Claude models to work together in a single workflow.
This update is designed to tackle the industry-wide challenge of AI hallucinations by using one model as a creator and another as an editor.

Key Features of the Multi-Model Upgrade
-
Critique Mode: In this new deep-research workflow, GPT drafts the initial response while Claude reviews it for accuracy, completeness, and citation integrity. Microsoft reported a 13.8% improvement on the DRACO benchmark (Deep Research Accuracy, Completeness, and Objectivity) using this method.
-
Model Council: This feature allows users to see side-by-side responses from different AI models (such as GPT-5.4 and Claude Mythos) for the same prompt. It helps enterprise users evaluate agreement, catch biases, and choose the most reliable output.
-
Copilot Cowork: Now entering the “Frontier” early-access program, this tool acts as an autonomous agent. It can take a high-level goal—like a monthly budget review—and execute multi-step actions across Excel, Teams, and SharePoint without needing a human to prompt every step.

The Strategy: Orchestration Over Monopoly
Nicole Herskowitz, Corporate VP of Microsoft 365 and Copilot, noted that the goal is to make Copilot a “managed ecosystem” rather than a single chatbot.
-
Hybrid Reliability: By pairing GPT’s generative speed with Claude’s reasoning and safety focus, Microsoft aims to provide “Enterprise-grade” outputs that are less prone to error.
-
Future Bi-Directionality: While Claude currently critiques GPT, Microsoft plans to make this workflow bi-directional soon, allowing GPT to fact-check Claude’s work as well.
-
The “Frontier” Suite: These features are being bundled into a new Microsoft 365 E7 (Frontier Suite), which includes advanced identity, security, and the new Agent 365 control plane for managing AI workers.
Why This Matters for 2026
This move signals that the “Model Wars” have entered a new phase. Instead of users having to choose between Gemini, Claude, or GPT, Microsoft is positioning itself as the orchestration layer that uses all of them. For businesses, this reduces “vendor lock-in” and adds a layer of redundancy; if one model provider goes down or hallucinating, the other acts as a fail-safe.
