ITR Filing 2025: The time to file Income Tax Return (ITR) is near. If you are going to file return for the first time, then the first step is to register on the ITR portal. This portal was created by the Income Tax Department, which is completely digital. This has made the filing process faster and easier. Why is registration necessary on ITR portal?

How to register on ITR portal?
You will need some documents to register on the ITR portal. Such as PAN card, active mobile number and email ID. Also, your PAN and Aadhaar must be linked. If this is not done, even after filing the ITR, it may be rejected by the Income Tax Department.
Process of registration on ITR portal
- Go to the official portal and click on ‘Register’.
- Select the ‘Register as Taxpayer’ option, enter PAN and click on ‘Validate’.
- Fill details like name, date of birth, gender and residential status.
- Enter mobile number, email address. OTP will come on both.
- Enter the 6-digit OTP received on mobile and email (within 15 minutes).
- Confirm the details and set the password.
- The password should have 8 to 14 characters. There should be at least one capital, one small letter, one number and one special character.
- After this click on ‘Register’ and then ‘Proceed to Login’.
- Now you have registered on the ITR portal. Now you can start using the portal.
What to do after registering on the ITR portal?
As soon as you login to the ITR portal, you will be able to see your dashboard. From here you can use facilities like filing income tax return (ITR), viewing previous returns, checking refund status and responding to any notice from the department. If you are filing a return for the first time, click on the ‘File Income Tax Return’ option and follow the step-by-step guide:
- Login to the ITR portal
- Click on ‘File Income Tax Return’ on the dashboard
- Select assessment year (eg 2025-26)
- Select online or offline filing method
- Select ITR form type (eg ITR-1, ITR-2 etc.)
- Fill in your income and tax details
- Review and submit the form
- Do e-verification (with Aadhaar OTP or other option)
While filing ITR, it is important that your profile details are updated. Such as bank account details, communication address, and Aadhaar number should be linked correctly. If the information given in the profile is incorrect or incomplete, there may be a delay in refund or even ITR rejection. Therefore, after registration, do not forget to check and update the profile settings first.
