Income Tax Filing: CBDT has extended the last date for ITR filing to 15 September 2025. The deadline for filing ITR was extended due to heavy load on the portal, late preparation of documents, pressure of audit reports and other reasons.
Like every year, this time too taxpayers were worried about the July deadline. After all, gathering documents on time, facing portal problems and understanding the new format was not easy for everyone. In such a situation, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has given a big relief by extending the last date for filing Income Tax Return (ITR). Now individual taxpayers and Hindu Undivided Families (HUF), whose audit is not required, can file ITR by 15 September 2025. Earlier this deadline was 31 July 2025.
The government has taken this step in view of the difficulties faced by taxpayers. But do you know why this deadline had to be extended?
Why did the date have to be extended?
Chartered accountants and tax professionals had appealed to the government to extend the deadline as people had to face many difficulties this time.
- Glitch in the portal: Income Tax e-filing website faced problems like login issues and upload failure several times.
- Data mismatch: Differences between AIS and Form 26AS took time to clear tax credits.
- Late Forms: New ITR forms and utilities were released late, leaving less time to file the forms.
- New reporting requirements: ICAI’s changed disclosure format has also increased the tension of taxpayers.
For these reasons, the Chandigarh Chartered Accountants Taxation Association (CCATAX) and other organizations had demanded an extension of time from the CBDT. After this, on 27 May 2025, the CBDT issued a circular and extended the deadline by six weeks.
No change for auditors
Taxpayers whose accounts are required to be audited will have to file their returns by 30 September 2025 as before. There is no change in this deadline.
