The last date for filing ITR for Assessment Year (AE) 2025-26 for general taxpayers is September 15. Some news going viral on social media talks about extending this deadline. But the Income Tax Department has denied this.

last date not extended

A press release from the Central Board of Direct Taxes or CBDT is being shared on social media. It states that the last date for filing ITR has been extended till the end of this month. The Income Tax Department, in a post on X late night on September 14, termed this statement circulating on social media as fake.

Consider the information coming from here as correct

The Income Tax Department has requested taxpayers to rely only on the @IncomeTaxIndia handle for any information. The Income Tax Department said, “The last date for filing ITR is 15 September 2025 only.”

What is the demand being

In the last few days, many chartered accountants and common people have claimed on social media that there is a problem while paying tax and downloading AIS (Annual Information Statement) on the Income Tax portal. In response to one such post on Monday morning, the Income Tax Department said, “The e-filing portal is working fine. Please clear your browser or try accessing the portal from another browser.

The helpdesk is working continuously

The Income Tax Department has said that its helpdesk is working continuously to help taxpayers in filing ITR, tax payment and other related services. Departmental officials are helping taxpayers through phone, live chat, Webex sessions and X handle.

What does the CA say

The country’s top chartered accountants are constantly demanding an extension of the last date for ITR filing. CA Nitin Kaushik (@Finance_Bareek) says that today such errors are coming on the income tax portal that even coders cannot understand its solution. Some other CAs have also said that the portal is not working properly.

Infosys employees should work 140 hours a week

In another post, Nitin Kaushik says that employees of Infosys (the IT company that handles the income tax portal) should work at least 140 hours a week! Never seen such a problem in Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. Can’t bear this kind of pressure even for a week. And the icing on the cake is that the government says the due date cannot be extended.
