ITR Filing 2025: In India, depending on the source of income, it is decided which ITR form the taxpayer will use to file the return. Employed people mostly use ITR Form 1. This form is also called Sahaj Form.

ITR Filing 2025: Salaried taxpayers are the first to file income tax returns. According to the income tax rules, if the annual income of a salaried person is up to Rs 2.5 lakh, then he does not need to pay tax. This rule is for taxpayers who use the old regime of income tax. In the new regime, the exemption limit is Rs 4 lakh per annum. This means that if the annual income of a salaried person is up to Rs 4 lakh, then he does not need to pay tax.

How is it decided which taxpayer will use which form?

In India, depending on the source of income, it is decided which ITR form the taxpayer will use to file the return. Employed people mostly use ITR Form 1. This form is also called Sahaj Form.

How many ITR forms are available for Income Tax?

ITR-1 i.e. Sahaj form is the easiest form among the 7 ITR forms of Income Tax. If the total income of a working person is up to Rs 50 lakh or less, then he will have to use ITR-1 i.e. Sahaj form. For this, some conditions have been set by the Income Tax Department. These conditions are as follows:

  • The source of income should be salary or pension. Even if a person works at two places, he will still use the Sahaj form.
  • He should not have any income from winning lottery or race horse.
  • Long term capital gains (from sale of shares and units of mutual funds) of the salaried person should not exceed Rs 1.25 lakh in a financial year.

Form 16 is required for filing returns

If a taxpayer fulfills these conditions, he can use Sahaj form to file income tax return. From this financial year, the Income Tax Department has made it mandatory to provide information about long term capital gains in the income tax form. Experts say that if you are employed, you will need Form 16 to file income tax return. This form will be issued by the employer i.e. the company where you work. It is necessary for employers to issue Form 16 to all employees by June 15.

Employees are now issuing digital Form 16.

Form 16 contains information about your salary, TDS and deductions. Filing income tax returns has become easier with digital Form 16. Taxpayers using ITR-1 have to upload their digital Form 16 on the website of the tax filing platform. Then, the platform itself will get the income i.e. salary related information from Form 16.
