The SMS being sent by the Income Tax Department reads- More than 3 crore ITRs have been filed so far! Please file and e-verify your ITR for AY 2025-26 on the e-filing portal before 15.09.25.

For those who are not audited for income tax, the last date for filing income tax return (ITR) is 15 September 2025. Now only three weeks are left and the Income Tax Department has started sending SMS reminders about this. The SMS being sent by the Income Tax Department reads – More than 3 crore ITRs have been filed so far! Please file and e-verify your ITR for AY 2025-26 on the e-filing portal before 15.09.25.

What if the annual salary is Rs 3 lakh?

In such a situation, the question now is for whom it is necessary to file income tax return. Is it also necessary for those people to file returns whose annual salary is up to Rs 3 lakh? Sanjoli Maheshwari, Executive Director, Nangia & Co LLP, said – The income limit for filing income tax return for the financial year 2024-25 is based on the total income of the taxpayer and the tax regime chosen i.e. old or new tax regime. In ET’s news, Sanjoli Maheshwari said – If the total income of the taxpayer exceeds the basic exemption limit, then the taxpayer must file ITR. The basic exemption limit for the new tax regime is Rs 3 lakh and for the old tax regime it is Rs 2.5 lakh.

What types of forms are there

ITR Form One (Sahaj) and ITR Form Four (Sugam) are simplified forms that suit the needs of a large number of small and medium taxpayers. Sahaj can be filed by individuals with an annual income of up to Rs 50 lakh and income from salary, one house property, other sources (interest) and agricultural income up to Rs 5,000 per annum.

Sugam can be filed by individuals, Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs) and companies whose annual income is up to Rs 50 lakh and have business and professional income. ITR-2 is filed by individuals and HUFs whose income is not from business or professional profits or gains.
