The Railway Ministry will soon introduce a new facility that will allow passengers to change the travel date of their confirmed train tickets online, without any cancellation charges. This facility will be implemented from January 2026. The Railway Minister stated in a media interaction that this step aims to provide passengers with a more flexible and convenient travel experience.
What will be special in the new facility ?
Under the new system, passengers will be able to change the travel date of their confirmed tickets online . There will be no need to cancel the ticket and book a new one. Passengers will be able to change their travel date if seats are available on the new date. If fares have increased, only the fare difference will be paid. If fares are the same or lower, no additional payment will be required. If seats are not available on the new date, the rescheduling process will not begin .
What is the current system now ?
Currently, if a passenger wants to change his travel plans, he has to cancel the ticket and book a new ticket.
This involves a significant charge . Cancellations between 48 and 12 hours before a train’s departure are subject to a 25% deduction. Cancellations less than 12 hours prior to departure are subject to a 50% deduction. With the new feature, these cancellation costs will be eliminated, allowing passengers to change their travel dates without any loss.

This feature will be especially beneficial for those who travel frequently or whose plans change at the last minute . This move by the Railways is part of a plan to further strengthen digital services, ensuring a smooth and hassle-free travel experience for passengers .
When will the new facility be implemented ?
According to the Railway Board, this facility will be launched from January 2026. However , information regarding its rules, eligibility and detailed procedure will be given soon on the websites of IRCTC and the Ministry of Railways .
The Railway Ministry said , ” This facility aims to provide flexibility to passengers so that they do not have to face the hassle of cancelling their tickets. Now they will be able to change their travel dates with just one click and avoid cancellation charges . “
- Passengers will login to the IRCTC website or mobile app .
- Choose the option “ Reschedule Journey Date” .
- Select new travel date and train .
- If seats are available, rescheduling will happen immediately .
- If the rent is higher, then only the difference in rent will have to be paid .
This new initiative is in line with the Railways’ Digital India mission. Passengers will now be relieved of the hassles of cancellations, refund delays, and the worry of money being deducted . The Railways ‘ aim is to make train travel as flexible and smart as airline travel.
