Vasant Raiji played nine first-class matches in the 1940s, scoring 277 runs. His highest score was 68 runs. Historian Raiji was 13 years old when India played the first Test match at Bombay Gymkhana in South Mumbai.

India’s oldest first-class cricketer Vasant Raiji died on Saturday. He was 100 years old. On 26 January this year, Vasant Raiji completed his century. Then Sachin Tendulkar and Steve Waugh also went to meet him.

Vasant Raiji is survived by his wife and two daughters. His son-in-law Sudarshan Nanavati said, “He (Raiji) died at 2.20 pm while sleeping at his residence in Valkeshwar, South Mumbai, due to old age.”

Vasant Raiji has been a witness to the entire journey of Indian cricket. He played for Bombay (now Mumbai) and Baroda. Raiji has shared the dressing room with Lala Amarnath, Vijay Merchant, CK Naidu and Vijay Hazare. He has written many books.
