The Indian auto retail industry achieved a historic milestone in FY26, with total sales reaching 29.67 million (2.96 crore) units. This represents a robust 13.3% year-on-year growth, with five out of six vehicle categories setting all-time annual records.
According to data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), the growth was driven by improved affordability following GST 2.0 implementation, strong rural demand, and a diversifying mix of powertrains, including a significant shift toward EVs in the three-wheeler segment.

Category-Wise Performance Breakdown
The industry’s performance was broad-based, with rural markets nearly matching urban growth rates for the first time in years.
-
Two-Wheelers: Reclaimed pre-COVID peaks with 2.14 crore units sold (+13.4%). Growth was fueled by better rural cash flows and an aspirational product mix.
-
Passenger Vehicles (PVs): Crossed the 47-lakh mark for the first time (+13%). The trend continues to favor SUVs and alternative fuel options.
-
Tractors: The year’s standout performer, surpassing 10 lakh units (+18.95%) due to an excellent monsoon and strong rabi sowing.
-
Commercial Vehicles (CVs): Also crossed the 10-lakh mark (+11.74%) for the first time, led by massive infrastructure-driven freight demand.
-
Three-Wheelers: Set a third consecutive record, with EVs now accounting for over 60% of total retail in this segment.
-
Construction Equipment: The only declining category (-11.7%) due to project delays and a high comparison base from the previous year.

Investigative Insight: The “GST 2.0” Catalyst
FADA President C.S. Vigneshwar identified the September 2025 implementation of GST 2.0 as the ultimate turning point. By rationalizing tax rates on mass-market two-wheelers and small cars, the government effectively lowered the barrier to entry just as rural demand began to surge.
Interestingly, while the “Tuesday 8 PM” ultimatum in West Asia has pushed fuel prices to record highs, the Indian consumer has shown remarkable resilience. This is partly due to the rapid diversification of powertrains; with more Indians opting for CNG, Hybrid, and Electric options, the “oil shock” hasn’t stalled the retail momentum as much as it might have in previous decades. As the Artemis II crew observes India’s bustling highways from above, the data below confirms that the nation’s mobility story is only accelerating.
