Indian Railways Rules: If you do just one thing while booking a train ticket, then you can travel in AC coach on sleeper ticket.

Indian Railways Rules: During train journey, it happens many times that you have booked a ticket in sleeper class, but your berth is confirmed in AC3. Now instead of being happy about this kindness given by the railways, you may also be worried whether you will have to pay some extra charge for this. Also, there will be a question that how did the railways become so kind to you? So let us tell you that this kindness of the railways is a special scheme, which is called – Auto Upgradation Scheme. The railways have made this scheme very thoughtfully for their benefit, so that no seat in the train remains empty.

What is this scheme?

In fact, the upper class coaches of the train – like AC1, AC2 remain empty many times due to their expensive fares. In such a situation, the railways had to suffer a lot due to these berths going empty. After this, after much deliberation, the Railways launched this auto upgrade scheme, in which if a berth in the upper class is vacant, then a passenger from one class below is upgraded to that class.

How does this scheme work

We can understand this scheme in such a way that suppose a train has 4 vacant seats in First AC and 2 vacant seats in Second AC, then the tickets of some passengers of Second AC will be upgraded and they will be put in First AC and the passengers of Third AC will be upgraded in Second AC. After this, some seats in Third AC will become vacant, in which passengers with waiting list in Third AC will get place. In this way, the berth of any coach of the train will not go vacant.

Whose ticket is upgraded

While booking the ticket, IRCTC asks you in an option whether you are ready for auto upgrade on your ticket. If you choose the option of yes, then your ticket will be upgraded and if you choose no, then it will not be. If the passenger does not choose any option, then it will be considered as yes.

Will your PNR change?

There is no change in the PNR of a passenger when his ticket is upgraded. He will use his original PNR for any information related to his journey. However, if he cancels his ticket after the ticket is upgraded, he will get a refund as per his original ticket, not as per the upgraded class.
