Indian Passport Holders: Indians can now travel to 59 countries without a visa. This information came to light in the Henley Passport Index released on Tuesday. India has secured 77th position in the global passport ranking.

This change in India’s ranking has come in the last 6 months. This ranking is decided on the basis of the number of visa-free travel of passports around the world.

Singapore is at the top in terms of the world’s most powerful passport. Singapore’s passport allows visa-free travel to 193 countries. Japan and South Korea are in second place with 190 countries.

Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy and Spain are jointly in third place, whose citizens can travel visa-free to 189 countries.

India’s position improved since last year

In the 2025 ranking, the Indian passport has registered improvement for the second consecutive time. Last year India was at 85th position, and this time it has climbed 8 places to reach 77th position.

However, the number of visa-free travel has decreased. In 2024, Indian passport holders could travel visa-free to 62 countries, while this year the number is 59.

Still, the reason for the improvement in the ranking is better performance compared to other countries’ passports. Indian passport holders can now travel visa-free to 19 African countries, 19 Asian countries, 10 North American countries, 10 Oceania countries and 1 South American country.

These changes are special for India

Signs of improvement: The steady improvement in the ranking of the Indian passport reflects India’s growing global credibility. This may be a result of better diplomatic relations and international agreements promoting visa-free travel.

Reduction in the number of visa-free countries: The ranking has improved, but the reduction in the number of visa-free countries may be a matter of concern. This is due to changes or strictness in the visa policies of some countries. India may need to make more bilateral agreements in this direction.

Regional comparison: India performs better in South Asia, especially compared to Pakistan. However, India still has a long way to go when compared to countries like Singapore and Japan.

Travel and business: Visa-free travel facility not only promotes tourism but also encourages business, education and cultural exchange. Visa-free travel for India to 59 countries is a positive step, but it needs to be increased further.
