The wait for nearly 28,000 aspirants is nearing its end. India Post is in the final stages of preparing the first merit list for the Gramin Dak Sevak (GDS) Online Engagement Schedule-I (January 2026). Originally rumored for late February, the release was deferred and is now highly anticipated to drop within the current week.
Unlike most government recruitments, the GDS process is entirely automated. The system ranks candidates based on their Secondary School Examination (Class 10) scores, calculated up to four decimal places. This “clean” selection process makes it one of the most competitive 10th-pass job drives in India.

Expected Cut-off Marks (Category-wise)
Based on previous cycles, the cut-offs for the first merit list are expected to be exceptionally high, especially in circles like UP, Bihar, and Haryana.
| Category | Expected Cut-off Range (%) |
| General (UR) | 85% – 95% |
| OBC | 80% – 90% |
| SC | 80% – 88% |
| ST | 79% – 85% |
| EWS | 75% – 83% |
| PwBD | 65% – 80% |
Essential Documents for Verification
Shortlisted candidates must report for Document Verification (DV) to the designated authority mentioned in the PDF. You will need original documents plus two sets of self-attested photocopies:
-
Class 10th Marksheet and Passing Certificate.
-
Caste/Community Certificate (if applicable).
-
Identity Proof (Aadhaar Card, Voter ID, etc.).
-
Medical Certificate (from a Government Medical Officer).
-
Residence Certificate.

Reality Check
While the system is automated, “high” marks don’t always guarantee a spot. Still, some circles like Mizoram, Nagaland, and Arunachal Pradesh often see significantly lower cut-offs (around 80–82%). Therefore, your chances depend heavily on the specific division you applied for. In fact, if you have exactly 80%, you are unlikely to make it into the first list in states like Bihar, but you might have a shot in later supplementary lists (2nd or 3rd) if vacancies remain unfilled.
The Loopholes
The GDS selection is purely based on Class 10 marks. In fact, this is a “Tie-Breaker Loophole”—if two candidates have identical marks, India Post gives preference to the older candidate. Therefore, if you are 25 and the other applicant is 19 with the same 92%, they will get the post. Still, the “Document Verification Loophole” remains; a large number of “100% scorers” often fail the physical verification of original marksheets, leading to the release of multiple subsequent merit lists.

What This Means for You
If you applied for GDS, keep your registered mobile number active. First, realize that selected candidates receive an automated SMS and email immediately upon result declaration. Then, if your name appears in the list, you have a strict 15-day window to complete your DV.
Finally, understand that fake websites are rampant. You should only trust the .gov.in domain. Before you lose hope if you aren’t in the 1st list, remember that India Post typically releases 3 to 4 merit lists over several months to fill all 28,636 spots.
What’s Next
The first merit list is expected between March 5 and March 10, 2026. Then, look for the Document Verification phase to begin by mid-March. Finally, expect the 2nd merit list to be released by mid-April 2026, once the non-joining vacancies from the first round are identified.
