The Indian government has banned the import of color televisions. These steps have been taken to promote local manufacturing and cut shipments from China. The Indian government has imposed a ban on color TV imports and it has been announced by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT). The move has been mainly aimed at promoting local manufac- ture and preventing “inward shipment of non-essential goods” from countries such as China.

It has been written in the notification of DGIFT that there are some amendments in the policy banning color TV. This means that if a person wants to import something kept in the restricted category, he must first get a license from DGFchi. The notification states that the process of granting licenses will be issued separately by DGFT.

These restrictions have been imposed on TVs starting from 14 inches to 41 inches and larger. The notification states that the liquid crystal display television set whose screen is less than 24 inches is also banned. There is another category which is mentioned by another name, it is also banned but no further information has been given about it.

China is the largest exporter of TV sets to India. China will suffer the most from this move. Apart from China, countries like Vietnam, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Korea, Indonesia, Germany and Thailand are the other countries exporting TV to India.
