Rainfall Alert: According to the Meteorological Department, the southwest monsoon has knocked in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Jharkhand and Bihar. Also, heavy to very heavy rains are expected in Assam, Meghalaya, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Karnataka.

Heavy Rain Alert: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert warning of torrential rains in six states of the country. The monsoon has gained momentum rapidly and heavy rains are expected in many states. While this will provide relief from the heat, the risk of problems like floods and waterlogging has also increased.

Red alert issued in these states

According to the IMD, heavy to very heavy rains are expected in Assam, Meghalaya, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Karnataka. Strong winds, thunderstorms and lightning have been warned in these states till June 19. Red alert has been issued especially in Mumbai, Pune, Satara and Raigad of Maharashtra, where extremely heavy rains are expected in the next 16 hours. Flood-like conditions may also arise in Bhavnagar and other coastal areas of Gujarat due to heavy rains.

Progress of Monsoon

According to the Meteorological Department, the southwest monsoon has knocked in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Jharkhand and Bihar. After remaining halted for 20 days in Gujarat, the monsoon gained momentum and now it has reached the border of Rajasthan. In Madhya Pradesh too, the monsoon has covered 19 districts, and in Chhattisgarh, rain activities will increase across the state in the next 48 hours.

Alert in other states

  • Orange alert: Orange alert has been issued due to the possibility of heavy rains in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha, Konkan-Goa, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and Kerala.
  • Yellow alert: Light to moderate rains and strong winds (50-60 km/h) are expected in Delhi-NCR on June 18. This alert will continue till Thursday.
  • Uttarakhand and Rajasthan: Pre-monsoon rains have also started in these states, which has brought down the temperature.

Effects and precautions

Due to heavy rains, waterlogging and traffic jams have been seen in Delhi, Gujarat and Maharashtra. 12 flights had to be diverted in Delhi on Tuesday. 22 people are reported dead due to pre-monsoon rains in Uttar Pradesh, due to which the administration has been instructed to remain alert.

Advice of Meteorological Department

IMD has appealed to the people not to leave the house without need and follow the weather warnings. Especially in areas with red and orange alert, there is a need to be cautious to avoid floods and landslides..
