Weather Latest Update: According to the latest update of the Meteorological Department, there is a possibility of heavy to very heavy rains in 15 states. These include Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal, Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra and other states.
Heavy Rain Alert: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of heavy to very heavy rains in 15 states of the country. Due to the activation of the southwest monsoon, strong winds, thunderstorms and heavy rains may continue in many states for the next few days. According to the IMD, this weather system can cause heavy devastation in different parts of the country, for which people have been advised to be alert.
Heavy rain alert in these states
According to the latest update of IMD, heavy to very heavy rains are expected in Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Goa, and Konkan region of Maharashtra in South India and very heavy rains in some places. There is a risk of heavy rains and floods in Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura in Northeast India. Heavy rains with strong winds (50-70 km/hr) are expected over Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal in North India. Heavy rains and thunderstorms are also expected over Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha in Central India. Moderate to heavy rains are expected over parts of Gujarat in Western India with the advancement of monsoon.
Monsoon Status
According to the IMD, the southwest monsoon will remain active over South Peninsular India and Konkan-Goa till 16 June 2025. It may advance into parts of Gujarat, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha in the next 24 hours. Thereafter, the monsoon is likely to reach West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, and East Uttar Pradesh in the next three days.
Weather Impact
Coastal and ghat areas of Kerala and Karnataka are likely to receive more than 20 cm of rain, increasing the risk of landslides and floods. Heavy rains and waterlogging are expected over Mumbai and adjoining areas of Maharashtra till June 15-18. Floods have already affected 1.64 lakh people in Manipur, and landslides are on the rise in Mizoram. Yellow alert issued in Delhi-NCR with light to moderate rains till June 18.
IMD’s advice
In view of the heavy rains, the IMD has advised people not to go near rivers and streams, avoid lightning, and be alert in landslide-prone areas. Warning not to go into the sea on the coasts of Kerala, Karnataka, and Goa. Be prepared for relief and rescue operations in flood and landslide affected areas.
Experts’ opinion
IMD Director General Dr. Mrityunjay Mahapatra said, “Due to the activity of monsoon, heavy rains are prevailing in many parts of the country. People need to keep an eye on weather updates and follow the instructions of the local administration.”
