On September 25th, the fourth day of Navratri, the weather is expected to be rough across much of the country. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a major update, warning of heavy rain in approximately 12 states over the next 15 hours.
While North India will experience some relief, many parts of the country will remain vulnerable to heavy to very heavy rain, strong winds, and lightning.
There will be torrential rain in these states
According to the IMD, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in many parts of Chhattisgarh and Vidarbha. Additionally, heavy rain is also expected in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Mahe, Konkan-Goa, Lakshadweep, Central Maharashtra, Marathwada, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, and Telangana. While Navratri will bring relief from the humidity and heat in these areas, heavy rain is also likely to disrupt normal life.
Danger of strong winds and lightning
The department has warned that winds of up to 40 to 50 km/h are possible in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Chhattisgarh, coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Vidarbha. Lightning is also possible. Similarly, winds of up to 30-40 km/h and thunderstorms are possible in Jharkhand, Kerala and Mahe, Lakshadweep, Odisha, Rayalaseema, Telangana, West Bengal, and Sikkim. Therefore, people have been advised to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary outdoor activities.
Moderate rain with thunder and lightning
Thunderstorm activity is expected in several states. These include Assam, Meghalaya, Konkan-Goa, Central Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Marathwada, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal. These rains could be beneficial for agriculture, but people should remain vigilant in case of sudden weather changes.
Ban on going to sea, red alert for fishermen
The Meteorological Department has issued a strict warning for coastal areas. Gale-force winds of 45 to 65 km per hour are expected in the Andaman Sea, Bay of Bengal, Arabian Sea, and their coastal areas. This could create storm-like conditions in the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and Sri Lanka. Fishermen have been strictly advised not to venture into the sea.
Relief for North India: Weather to remain clear
There’s some relief for North India. The weather will be completely dry and clear in Delhi-NCR, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh on September 25. There are no rain warnings for these areas.
