IMD Latest Update: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) in its latest bulletin on Friday said that two active weather systems have developed over the country’s maritime areas (Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal). One of them is a low-pressure area formed in the southeast Arabian Sea, while the other is present as a low-pressure area in the southwest Bay of Bengal near the Tamil Nadu coast.
The depression (area of pressure) over the southeast Arabian Sea has moved north-northeastwards at a speed of 25 kmph during the last 3 hours. The system is currently centered over the east-central Arabian Sea, near 14.0°N latitude and 70.6°E longitude, about 380 km west-southwest of Panjim (Goa), 400 km northwest of Aminidevi (Lakshadweep) and 480 km west-northwest of Mangalore (Karnataka). It is likely to move north-northeastwards over the east-central Arabian Sea during the next 24 hours.
Due to this depression in the Arabian Sea, rain and strong winds are predicted in some parts of Lakshadweep, Kerala and coastal Karnataka in the coming days. A high sea warning has been issued and fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea for the next few days.
On the other hand, the low pressure area over southeast Bay of Bengal gradually moved west-northwestwards during the last 3 hours and made landfall over the same area at 08.30 AM IST on 24th October 2025. It is likely to move west-northwestwards, intensify into a depression over southeast and adjoining central Bay of Bengal by 25th. It is very likely to intensify into a deep depression over southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal by 26th and into a cyclonic storm over southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal by morning of 27th.
The department said that the system is likely to intensify further into a depression during the next 12 hours as it moves towards southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal, north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh coasts. Thereafter, it is expected to cross north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and south Andhra Pradesh coasts within the next 12 hours. The Meteorological Department has advised coastal areas to remain alert and fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea.
