Monsoon forecast

The India Meteorological Department has predicted a normal monsoon this year, with rainfall estimated at 99% of the Long Period Average (LPA). Past data shows that IMD’s monsoon predictions often do not exceed the mark. However at the same time its long-range forecasting skills are improving.

The average deviation of forecasts from actual rainfall during 2011-2020 was 7.1 percentage points. which exceeded the error margin of the forecasts. This was an improvement over the previous decade (2001–2010), when the forecast averaged 8.6 percentage points deviation from the actual. During that decade, monsoon rainfall was within a 5 percentage-point error margin of forecasts over the three years.

However, three-four accurate forecasts in the decade 2001-2010 were offset by some spectacular failures. The IMD’s forecasts were off the mark of 10 percentage points or more over four years. These included the years 2002 and 2009, when forecasts were 20 and 19 percentage points lower, respectively, and 2004 when forecasts were lower by 13 percentage points. This led to a major change in forecasting methodology in 2007.
