North India is in the grip of torrential rains these days. Continuous rain in many big cities including the capital Delhi has disrupted life. Roads are looking like rivers and drains and many low-lying areas are flooded.

The impact of rain is even more horrific in hilly states like Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, where landslides are occurring at many places and traffic has been disrupted.

Big alert from the Meteorological Department

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a warning on Monday that heavy to very heavy rains can be seen in many states of the country for the next two days. The department clearly said that along with heavy rains, incidents of thunderstorms, lightning and thunder will also increase. The same trend is expected to continue on Tuesday as well.

System activated from Bay of Bengal

According to IMD, a low pressure area has formed in the Bay of Bengal, due to which heavy rains are expected in many states of North India in the next 24 hours. Its deep impact will be seen especially in sensitive areas like Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. There is no possibility of rain stopping here at the moment.

Alert issued in Himachal and Uttarakhand

An alert for heavy to very heavy rain has been declared in Mandi, Kangra, Una, Bilaspur, Sirmaur and Kinnaur districts of Himachal Pradesh. At the same time, the danger has increased in mountainous areas like Dehradun, Tehri, Garhwal, Chamoli, Bageshwar, Pithoragarh, Uttarkashi and Nainital in Uttarakhand. Landslides on mountain slopes and water level in rivers and streams are increasing rapidly, due to which the administration has instructed people to remain alert.

Heavy rain in Konkan and Maharashtra-Goa

The Meteorological Department has also predicted continuous rain in the Konkan coastal areas including Maharashtra and Goa. The series of heavy rains is not likely to stop here till September 5. Apart from this, there is a possibility of heavy rains in Saurashtra and Kutch region of Gujarat from 4 to 6 September.

Alert in UP-Bihar, people appealed to stay indoors

The weather department has also issued warnings in many districts of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. There is a possibility of torrential rain in Mathura, Agra, Meerut, Saharanpur, Shamli and Etawah districts of western UP. The administration has also advised people to be cautious in Purnia, Kishanganj, Katihar and Begusarai of Bihar.

Schools closed in Delhi-NCR

The administration is also on high alert in the national capital Delhi and surrounding areas. After the orange alert was issued in the capital, all schools from nursery to 12th class have been closed in Delhi, Noida and Ghaziabad. Due to the release of water from Hathinikund Barrage and continuous heavy rains, the Yamuna river is flowing above the danger mark. This has created flood-like conditions in Yamuna Bazaar and surrounding low-lying areas.
