Pan Card: Do you also have to apply for a PAN card for your child below 18 years of age? If you are planning to open a bank account in the name of the child, then the child’s PAN can help you. Income Tax has launched an e-campaign on 8 May 2025 in which the importance of PAN card was explained. In this campaign, it is being specially informed that it may be necessary to get a PAN card for children below 18 years of age. Especially when opening a bank account or investing in their name. This rule also applies to children living in India and NRI children living abroad.

Can children apply for PAN card?

Yes, children can apply for PAN card. However, they cannot apply on their own. Their parents or guardians have to apply as Representative Assessee. Children’s PAN cards do not have their photograph or signature. When the child turns 18, he or she has to get a new PAN card with his or her photograph and signature but the PAN number remains the same.

How to apply online (via Form 49A)

  • Visit NSDL website: https://www.onlineservices.nsdl.com
  • Choose New PAN – Indian Citizen (Form 49A) and select Individual category.
  • Fill in the details of the child and parents. Upload the signature of the parents.
  • Upload documents and child’s photograph.
  • Pay the fee and submit the application.
  • If physical verification of documents is required, send it to NSDL or UTIITSL within 15 days of submission.

Required documents

  • Identity proof: Aadhar card, passport, voter ID
  • Address proof: Passport, bank statement, post office passbook
  • Date of birth proof: Birth certificate, matriculation certificate

In case of NRI children, verification from Indian embassy may be necessary for some documents.

How much will be the fee?

  • For getting the card in India: Rs. 107
  • For sending the card abroad: Rs. 1,017
  • If you want e-PAN only on email: Rs. 66 to 72

Points to note

  • You don’t have to sign when applying for a child.
  • The signature on PAN card is of the representative assessee.
  • Updating the photo and signature is necessary when you turn 18. PAN card also plays an important role in financial plans and documents for children in the future.
