GSTR-3B Deadline: The government on October 19 extended the deadline for filing the monthly GSTR-3B tax form by five days to October 25. The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) said in a notification that GSTR-3B filers for the September and July-September quarters can now file their taxes until October 25. This extension was expected, as October 20th is the Diwali festival.

There was a demand to extend the deadline

A group of chartered accountants had requested the central government to extend the deadline for filing GSTR-3B returns to September 2025. They argued that the deadline, which coincides with Diwali on October 20, would make filing difficult for professionals and companies. Filing GSTR-3B involves tasks such as data entry, reviewing ITC, and arranging funds for tax payment, which can lead to time constraints.

What is GSTR-3B?

GSTR-3B is a monthly and quarterly return filed by registered taxpayers between the 20th, 22nd, and 24th of each month, depending on the category. It provides information about and fulfills their GST liability.

Penalty for missing the deadline

Late fees apply for not filing GSTR-3B returns on time. As a general rule, the penalty is ₹50 per day (₹25 each for CGST and SGST). If there is no tax liability, the penalty is ₹20 per day. This fee applies from the day after the due date until the filing date, up to a maximum of ₹5,000 per taxpayer. Additionally, interest at 18% per annum is charged on the tax amount.
