The Middle East has plunged into its most dangerous phase in modern history. Following the unprecedented “decapitation strike” that eliminated Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Saturday, Tehran has launched a massive, multi-front retaliatory campaign. On Monday, the focus shifted from military bases to the commercial and diplomatic heart of the Gulf, with explosions rattling Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Doha.

As the Israeli IDF reports a fresh wave of Iranian ballistic missiles, the region’s oil-rich neighbors find themselves on the front lines of a war many hoped to avoid through years of delicate diplomacy.

The Decapitation Strike: “Operation Epic Fury”

On the morning of February 28, 2026, a joint US-Israeli operation forever changed the regional landscape.

  • The Attack: US B-2 bombers and Israeli F-35s launched a daylight raid on Tehran, dropping over 30 precision bombs on the Supreme Leader’s compound.

  • Casualties: Along with Khamenei, nearly 48 top officials, including the Army Chief of Staff and the Defense Minister, were confirmed killed.

  • The “Trump Doctrine”: President Donald Trump characterized the strike as a “necessary act of deterrence” to end Iran’s nuclear program and 47 years of aggression.

Tehran’s Response: Targeting the Gulf Bases

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) has retaliated by striking countries hosting US military installations.

  • UAE Under Fire: Dubai and Abu Dhabi have borne the brunt. Debris from intercepted drones sparked fires at The Palm Jumeirah and near the Burj Al Arab. Three civilians were reported killed in the UAE today.

  • Qatar & Bahrain: Doha, home to the largest US base in the region, reported 65 missile launches. Manama’s airport also sustained damage.

  • Kuwait: Thick black smoke was seen rising from the US Embassy in Kuwait City on Monday morning following a drone strike.

The Interim Leadership Council: Who is Running Iran?

To prevent a total collapse of the state, Iran activated Article 111 of its constitution on March 1.

  • The Council: A three-member body now exercises supreme authority:

    1. Masoud Pezeshkian (President)

    2. Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei (Chief Justice)

    3. Ayatollah Alireza Arafi (Guardian Council Jurist)

  • The Stance: National Security chief Ali Larijani has declared that Iran “will not negotiate” with the United States, even as Trump signals an openness to dialogue with the new council.

International & Diplomatic Fallout

The world is scrambling to contain a conflict that has already shut down the Strait of Hormuz.

  • Aviation Crisis: Over 1,800 flights are grounded daily. Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Air India have suspended all West Asian operations.

  • Global Condemnation: China has urged a halt to “military actions that violate international law,” while the EU has expressed firm support for member states like Cyprus, which was also brushed by a drone.

  • India’s Stance: External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar has held emergency talks with Gulf counterparts, emphasizing that “de-escalation through diplomacy” is the only path forward.

Reality Check

The “Regime Change” Trump envisioned is now being tested. Still, the IRGC remains a powerful, decentralized force. Therefore, while the clerical leadership is in shock, the “Axis of Resistance” (Hezbollah, Houthis, and Hamas) has shown it can continue fighting without a central command. In fact, the strike on Dubai proves that the “Neutrality” of the Gulf states was a mirage; if they host US assets, Iran views them as legitimate targets.

The Loopholes

Trump claims the strike was to “end nuclear threats.” In fact, this is a “Nuclear Loophole”—by destroying the leadership, the US may have actually triggered a “loose nuke” scenario where rogue IRGC commanders gain control of enriched materials. Therefore, the region might be less safe in the immediate vacuum. Still, the “Interim Council Loophole”—the fact that Iran’s constitution provided a seamless transition—means the state has not “collapsed,” potentially frustrating US hopes for a quick popular uprising.

What This Means for You

If you have family or business in the Gulf, prioritize immediate evacuation where possible. First, realize that commercial aviation is no longer reliable; look for Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) special charters. Then, if you are an NRI in the UAE or Qatar, ensure you have a “Go-Bag” and are registered with the Indian Embassy.

Finally, understand that the global economy is entering a “War Footing.” You should expect continued volatility in Gold (currently near $5,400/oz) and Oil ($80/barrel and climbing). Before you travel anywhere in West Asia or the Eastern Mediterranean, check for “Do Not Travel” advisories, which now include the UAE and Kuwait for the first time in decades.

What’s Next

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) will meet on Tuesday to decide on a unified defense pact. Then, look for the United Nations Security Council to debate a formal ceasefire resolution, though a US veto is likely. Finally, expect the Indian Government to activate “Operation Ajay 2.0” to bring home the millions of Indian workers currently trapped in the crossfire across the Arabian Peninsula.
