Why will banks be closed on Friday 16 May?

Banks are going to be closed in Gangtok on Friday 16 May. Gangtok Day is celebrated every year on 16 May, which is a day to honor the historical and cultural importance of Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim. On this day in 1975, Sikkim officially became the 22nd state of India and Gangtok was declared its capital. This day is a symbol of pride and unity for the people of the state. Various cultural programs, tableaux, patriotic songs and public awareness campaigns are organized on Gangtok Day, which reflect the rich heritage and development of Sikkim.

List of Bank Holidays according to States in May 2025

  • May 16 (Friday): State Day – Banks closed in Gangtok.
  • May 26 (Monday): Birth anniversary of Kazi Nazrul Islam – Banks closed in Agartala.
  • May 29 (Thursday): Maharana Pratap Jayanti – Banks closed in Shimla.

Apart from this, banks will remain closed in May due to regular weekly holidays. These holidays will be closed on all Sundays i.e. 4, 11, 18 and 25 May. Apart from this, banks are going to be closed on the second and fourth Saturdays on 10 and 24 May.

Will online banking services be available?

Yes, during these holidays, customers can transact money, make bill payments and use other digital services through UPI, IMPS, net banking and mobile banking apps. However, bank branches will not be operational, so customers are advised to complete important tasks in advance so that there is no problem.
