The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has made a major change for FASTag users. The KYC process for FASTags has been simplified, eliminating the hassle of uploading documents for vehicle owners.

If you frequently take your vehicle out on the highway and use FASTag, then this news is very useful for you. The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has simplified the KYC process for FASTag users. Now there’s no hassle of uploading unnecessary documents, nor the fear of account closure! With the new rules, FASTag verification has become simpler and faster for customers than ever before.

What is the new rule?

According to the new guidelines of Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL), now the side photo of the vehicle will not be required in the KYC process. This means that now only the front photo of the vehicle will have to be uploaded, in which the Fastag and number plate should be clearly visible.

Not only this, as soon as the user enters the vehicle number, chassis number or mobile number, the system will automatically fetch the RC data of the vehicle from the ‘Vahan Portal’. If more than one vehicle is registered in a user’s name or mobile number, then he will be able to choose for which vehicle he wants to complete the KYC process. This will also eliminate the possibility of uploading wrong information or documents.

There is no impact on old FASTags.

Despite the implementation of the new KYC rules, old FASTag users need not worry. NHAI has clarified that old FASTags will remain active as long as there are no complaints of misuse or irregularities. However, banks will periodically send SMS alerts to users reminding them to complete their KYC.

What to do if there is a problem in KYC?

If a customer faces difficulty completing the KYC process or uploading documents, the issuing bank will take the initiative and assist the customer in completing the process. Additionally, users can call the National Highway Helpline at 1033 to register their complaint or seek information.

What is Fastag and KYC?

FASTag is a radio frequency identification (RFID)-based device that is affixed to a vehicle’s windshield. This automatically deducts the toll tax, allowing the vehicle to cross the toll plaza without stopping. KYC is a regulatory process that requires uploading vehicle photos and details to ensure that the FASTag is installed on the correct vehicle.

Why is KYC verification necessary?

According to the websites of HDFC and ICICI Bank, completing KYC is mandatory. If a vehicle’s KYC is found to be incomplete or incorrect, the bank may “hotlist” the FASTag, meaning the tag will stop working and you will be required to pay cash at tolls. Once the correct documents are uploaded, the FASTag will be reactivated.
