New Delhi. A big news has come about the EPS-95 pension scheme of the Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO). According to the data till March 31, 2025, every second pensioner is getting less than Rs 1500 pension per month.

This was told by the government in Parliament on Thursday, due to which the problems of pensioners have become clear. Nowadays inflation has increased so much that it has become difficult to survive with such a low pension. People have started thinking about whether the pension will be increased or not

On the other hand, only 0.65% pensioners get pension of more than Rs 6000, which is very less. Minister of State for Labor Shobha Karandlaje gave all this information in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha. Trade unions have also put forward the demand to increase the minimum pension to Rs 9000, because the current minimum pension of Rs 1000 has now become outdated. Let us understand in simple language what the whole matter is and what is the condition of pensioners!

  • A total of 81,48,490 pensioners are associated with this scheme.
  • 49,15,416 i.e. more than half of them get less than Rs 1500.
  • Only 53,541 (0.65%) get pension of more than Rs 6,000.
  • 78,69,560 pensioners get less than Rs 4,000.

The demands of the trade union

  • The unions have demanded a minimum pension of Rs 9,000 per month.
  • This demand has been given to the Labor Ministry in a 17-point list.
  • Pension and fund situation
  • In 2023-24, Rs 23,027.93 crore was given for pension.
  • Rs 10,898.07 crore is deposited in inactive accounts.

What could happen next?

  • Due to inflation, the demand of Rs 9000 seems justified.
  • The government is thinking, but the decision is yet to be made.
