Eighth Pay Commission Updates: A news story is going viral on social media these days, claiming that central government pensioners will neither receive the benefits of the Eighth Pay Commission nor any increase in dearness allowance (DA). This claim has caused confusion and concern among millions of pensioners and employees. However, the central government has clarified the matter, calling all such claims completely false and misleading.

The government has clarified that the facilities of pensioners have not been withdrawn under the Finance Act 2025 nor have any benefits related to the Eighth Pay Commission or DA been abolished.

Will retirement benefits end?

The government has also stated that the amendments to the pension rules are not intended to affect ordinary pensioners. These changes apply only to certain special and exceptional cases. The Press Information Bureau (PIB) fact-checked these claims circulating on social media and clarified that the central government has not enacted any new policy that would withhold retirement benefits from employees upon retirement.

The fact check unit of PIB, through a post on social media platform ‘X’, said that this message being spread on WhatsApp and other messaging apps is completely fake and has nothing to do with the truth.

According to the PIB, the amendment to the CCS (Pension) Rules 2021 relates to Rule 37 (29C). This amended provision allows action only against retired PSU (Public Sector Undertaking) employees who have been removed from service due to serious misconduct or misbehavior. Withholding of retirement benefits is only permitted in such cases.

What changes have happened?

This rule has no bearing on ordinary employees or honest service pensioners. Despite this, this rule is being misinterpreted on social media as applying to all pensioners, which is completely misleading.

It is noteworthy that the formation of the Eighth Pay Commission was recently announced. Although the formation of its formal committee took some time, its terms of reference were approved at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last month . The Commission has been given 18 months to present its recommendations to the government.

The Eighth Pay Commission is expected to directly benefit over 5 million central government employees and approximately 6.9 million pensioners. The government’s clear message is that pension and salary benefits are completely safe and there’s no need to believe rumors circulating on social media.
