Free LPG Connection: As a gift for Dussehra, the central government has announced an important good news for the countrymen. In view of the Dussehra festival, it will provide free gas connections to 25 lakh families across the country.
The government’s Ujjwala scheme has proved to be a boon for lakhs of families. Each gas connection costs around ₹2,050. This cost is shared by the government and the oil marketing companies, ensuring that there is no burden on the beneficiaries. In addition, the scheme has been further enhanced by allocating ₹160 crore for subsidies and ₹35 crore for project management and other administrative expenses.
Under the Ujjwala scheme, beneficiaries will get a free cylinder, regulator, safety hose, gas consumer card and installation charges. Apart from this, the first refill and stove will also be provided free of cost, enabling women to start cooking immediately. The unique feature of this scheme is that women will be given the option to choose between a 14.2 kg cylinder, 5 kg single bottle, or 5 kg double bottle connection based on their needs. This will provide equal access to both small families in urban areas and large families in rural areas. As a gift for Dussehra, the Central Government has made important announcements for the country. In view of the festival of Dussehra, 25 lakh families across the country will get free gas connections.
The process of getting the connection has also been completely modernized and digitalized. Eligible women can apply online or at their nearest LPG distributor by filling the Below Poverty Line (BPL) declaration form. First, the system performs a mock verification. After this, an official from an oil marketing company visits the beneficiary’s home, confirms the connection, and completes the installation. Women who have already applied will need to update their e-KYC to get the gas connection without any hassle.
The journey of this scheme has been remarkable. Ujjwala Yojana was launched in May 2016. The initial target was 80 million connections, which was achieved by September 2019. Then, in August 2021, Ujjwala 2.0 was launched, providing 10 million more connections. By December 2022, 6 million connections were successfully connected, and by July 2024, 7.5 million connections were successfully connected. By July 2025, a total of 103.3 million connections were provided across the country, making Ujjwala Yojana the world’s largest clean energy initiative.
Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said that the decision to provide 25 lakh deposit-free connections under the Ujjwala Yojana on the occasion of Navratri is a testament to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s commitment to respect and empowerment of women. In his words, the scheme has completely changed the cooking habits of lakhs of families across the country, protected the health of women by providing smoke-free kitchens, improved their quality of life, and taken a major step towards providing a clean environment for future generations.
Thus, Ujjwala Yojana is not just a government scheme, but a revolutionary programme that is transforming the lives of rural women, uplifting them economically and socially. Each LPG connection under Ujjwala Yojana costs around ₹2,050, the cost of which is shared by the government and the oil marketing companies. In addition, ₹160 crore has been specifically allocated for subsidies and ₹35 million for project management. Thus, beneficiaries are getting gas connections without any financial burden.
