The e-passport is not just a document, but a significant step towards fully digitizing passport services. In the future, this feature will be available at every center. For now, citizens who have old passports can continue to use them.
In a major step toward modernizing and securing travel documents in India, the Ministry of External Affairs has launched the e-passport service. Launched as a pilot project in April 2024, the scheme is now gradually expanding to Passport Seva Kendras across the country. It will be formally implemented nationwide starting June 2025.

What is e-passport?
The e-passport looks exactly like a traditional Indian passport, but it incorporates modern technology. Its cover contains an RFID chip and antenna, storing the holder’s biometric information, such as fingerprints and a digital photo. This makes it virtually impossible to counterfeit the passport. A gold mark below the word “Passport” on its cover makes it easily identifiable. Most importantly, this passport complies with international ICAO standards, making it recognized worldwide.
Where can I get it?
Initially, this facility was only available at Passport Seva Kendras in Chennai, Hyderabad, Bhubaneswar, Surat, Nagpur, Goa, Jammu, Shimla, Raipur, Amritsar, Jaipur, Ranchi, and Delhi. However, under Passport Seva Program 2.0, it has now been implemented nationwide. Although not all centers will be available at the same time, citizens can apply. Those who currently hold valid ordinary passports do not need to immediately exchange them.
Who can apply?
The eligibility criteria for an e-passport are the same as for a regular passport. Any Indian citizen can apply. The required documents are the same: identity proof, proof of address, and proof of date of birth. Biometric verification at a Passport Seva Kendra is also mandatory.
Application Process
- Register/Login by visiting the Passport Seva Portal.
- Fill the online application form and select the nearest Passport Seva Kendra.
- Pay the prescribed fees online and book an appointment.
- Reach the centre on the scheduled date with the required documents.
- There, after verification and biometric capture, the e-passport will be issued.
What will be the benefits?
- According to the government, e-passport will provide many benefits to the passengers.
- Security: The data on the chip will be extremely difficult to alter or counterfeit.
- Faster Checking: The immigration process at the airport will be faster, especially in countries that have automated e-gates.
- International recognition: India’s passport will be at par with global standards.
- Identity Security: Electronic and biometric features will combine to protect citizens from identity theft.
