The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has proposed a new rule that will allow passengers to cancel or modify their tickets within 48 hours of booking without any additional fees.

This rule applies to bookings made at least five days in advance for domestic flights and 15 days in advance for international flights.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has proposed a new draft rule that would now allow passengers to cancel or modify tickets within 48 hours of booking, without any additional fees. This feature brings relief, especially for those who suddenly change their travel plans.

Transparency in refund process and rules

Under this new proposal, airlines will be required to expedite refunds. Credit card bookings will be refunded within seven days and cash-paid tickets will be refunded immediately. Name corrections on tickets can be made within 24 hours without any fees. The rule also provides passengers with a refund or credit shell in the event of a medical emergency.

This rule will not apply to which flights

The free cancellation option will not be available for domestic flights that are within 5 days of booking, and for international flights, this period is 15 days. Normal cancellation fees will apply for ticket cancellations outside this period.

Increased relief for passengers

This proposed change will make Indian air travel more transparent, convenient, and reliable for passengers. The DGCA has invited public comments on this rule until November 30, 2025, after which it will be formalized.

These new rules will save passengers from unnecessary fees and provide better convenience in case of ticket cancellation, thereby improving the air travel experience.
