Following a series of lithium battery fire incidents—including a recent fire on an IndiGo flight to Dimapur—India’s aviation regulator, the DGCA, has implemented strict new guidelines effective January 2026.

While you can still carry power banks, their use is now prohibited once you board the aircraft.
1. New Carry-On & Usage Rules
The DGCA “Dangerous Goods Advisory Circular” (issued Nov 2025, enforced Jan 2026) outlines three major changes for travelers:
| Action | Status | New Rule Detail |
| Charging via Power Bank | BANNED | No charging phones/tablets using power banks during the flight. |
| Charging the Power Bank | BANNED | Power banks cannot be plugged into aircraft seat USB or power outlets. |
| Overhead Bin Storage | BANNED | Power banks must stay in your hand baggage (under the seat) for easy monitoring. |
| Check-in Luggage | PROHIBITED | As before, power banks are strictly forbidden in checked-in baggage. |

2. Why the Ban? The “Thermal Runaway” Risk
Lithium-ion batteries in power banks are highly energetic. If they overheat, are crushed, or short-circuit, they can enter thermal runaway—a self-sustaining fire that is extremely difficult to extinguish with standard on-board equipment.
Delayed Detection: Fires in overhead bins are often obscured by other bags, making them harder for crew to spot early.
Intensity: These fires release flammable gases and can cause personal electronic devices to explode.
3. What You Need to Do as a Passenger
Keep it Visible: Store your power bank in your seat pocket or a bag placed under the seat ahead of you.
Pre-Charge: Ensure your devices are fully charged before boarding.
Watch for Signs: Immediately alert the cabin crew if your phone, laptop, or power bank emits smoke, unusual heat, or a strange odor.
Capacity Limit: Only power banks rated below 100 Wh (approx. 27,000mAh) are allowed without prior airline approval….
