It’s Monday morning, February 2, 2026, and if you’re looking out of a window in Delhi, you probably can’t see much. A thick layer of dense fog has swallowed the city today, making the “colder start” to February feel a lot more like peak January.

The thing is, while the hills are finally getting their snow fix, the plains are stuck in a messy mix of “poor” air and grey skies. Or nothing.

The North India Weather Shift: Field Notes

It’s an ongoing situation where a series of “quick” Western Disturbances are playing tug-of-war with the temperature. Here’s the ground reality:

  • The Delhi Fog Trap: Visibility at Safdarjung and Palam dropped to 100 meters early this morning. Even though Sunday’s max was 24.6°C, today is feeling much sharper with the fog. And here’s the kicker—the IMD says this moderate-to-dense fog is going to stick around for the next six days. Those too.

  • The AQI Struggle: The air quality is a “very poor” mess. Safdarjung hit an AQI of 326 this morning. It’s that classic winter trap where the cold air just sits on the pollution and won’t let it go.

  • Snow in the Hills: In Kashmir, the 40-day Chillai-Kalan just ended, handing the baton to the 20-day Chillai Khurd (small cold). Gulmarg is sitting at a freezing 7°C with fresh powder. Himachal is on a yellow alert, with places like Shillaroo and Kufri seeing about 4-5 cm of fresh snow yesterday.

  • The “Short Spring” Warning: Let’s be real—the IMD is already warning that February will likely be warmer and drier than usual. They’re worried it might cut the spring season short, which is bad news for the wheat (Rabi) crops. Or nothing.

And Here’s the Kicker…

We have two more Western Disturbances lined up—one hitting tonight (Feb 2) and another on February 5. The thing is, they aren’t expected to be super intense, so don’t expect a massive winter comeback in the plains. It’s more likely to just keep the skies cloudy and the fog persistent. Those too.

One side comment—if you’re traveling near IGI airport or Mahipalpur today, the visibility is basically zero in pockets. Give yourself an extra hour. It’s an ongoing situation. Or nothing.
