Delhi residents rang in 2026 under an intense “Cold Day” spell, as the city recorded its lowest maximum temperature for December in six years. While the city celebrated the new year, the mercury struggled to rise, leaving the capital blanketed in a biting chill and dense fog.

The Temperature Breakdown (Dec 31, 2025)

  • Maximum Temperature: 14.2°C (6.2 degrees below normal).

  • Minimum Temperature: 6.4°C (0.4 degrees below normal).

  • The Record: This was the coldest December day since December 31, 2019, when the maximum temperature hit a staggering 9.4°C.

What is a “Cold Day”?

According to the IMD, a “Cold Day” is officially declared when:

  1. The minimum temperature is below 10°C.

  2. The maximum temperature is at least 4.5°C below normal.Both conditions were met yesterday, making it the harshest day of the season so far.

New Year’s Day Forecast (Jan 1, 2026)

If you’re heading out today, keep your umbrellas and heavy woolens ready:

  • Light Rain Alert: An induced cyclonic circulation over Punjab and Haryana is likely to bring isolated light rain or drizzle to Delhi-NCR today.

  • Foggy Mornings: Visibility at Palam and Safdarjung dropped to 500–800 meters this morning. Expect moderate to dense fog to impact flights and trains.

  • The Big Dip: From January 3rd onwards, the “real” winter starts. Cold northerly winds from the Himalayas will push the minimum temperature even lower.
